Principles of Nursing Practice for Acutely Ill Children: Level 1 & 2 Critical Care Course
We are delighted to be continuing with our NTPN PCC Level 1 & 2 Course in partnership with London Southbank University and Barts Health NHS Trust. The sessions are taught by subject matter experts from across hospital Trusts in the North Thames region and has fantastic regional uptake of senior nurses keen to develop their skills, knowledge and confidence in caring for acutely ill children and young people.
The aim is to develop the local paediatric workforce, enabling the prompt and accurate assessment of the critically ill child. This course covers all aspects recommended by the PCCS standards and the RCPCH Time to Move On document.
This programme aims to develop the skill set and knowledge base required for children’s nurses to systematically assess, recognise, and initiate stabilisation / treatment of the critically ill child in the level 1 & 2 setting.
- It aims to encourage students’ reflective practice, evaluation of care, critical thinking and effective crisis resource management skills.
- The learner will develop a knowledge base regarding anatomy and physiology, aetiology and pathophysiology of some of the most critical conditions seen in the level 1 & 2 setting.
- The learner will develop skills and knowledge required for stabilising a critically ill child (equipment used and the pharmacology of emergency medication).
- Throughout the programme the escalation, communication and roles and responsibilities of other team members and that of the learner will be explored

By the end of the module, students will be able to:
- Knowledge and Understanding.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the knowledge underpinning high dependency care for children and young people.
Utilise the evidence to support the care delivery for children, young people and their families during a period of acute illness.
Demonstrate clinical skills including assessment, prioritisation, and communication.
This module has been developed for senior nursing staff working in Level 1 & 2 paediatric ward settings, ambulatory care and A&E.
This course will be delivered online, with some pre-course e-learning to be completed in your own time
This course can be taken at Level 6 (Degree) or Level 7 (Masters).
Presentation, competencies and essay.
20 credits.
£310 pp (paid to LSBU). Funding needs to be approved by your Trust via your line manager. It is not possible to self-fund.
